The Take is a Canadian documentary film released in 2004 by the wife and husband team of Naomi Klein and Avi Lewis. It tells the story of workers in Buenos Aires, Argentina who reclaim control of a closed Forja auto plant where they once worked and turn it into a worker cooperative, or as could be argued, a working model of anarcho-syndicalism.

This is a moving film that puts a human face on the struggle for alternatives to capitalism. It is inspiring to listen to the story of ordinary people faced with great obstacles working together in solidarity and providing a living example of Economic Democracy for the Americas.

The federal NDP's Convention is coming soon, and the Faith and Social justice Commission is holding a special event. We will have, as a guest speaker, Reverend Eric Irvin, who was the director of the Michigan Faith Vote for the Obama campaign. It will be Saturday August 15th at noon. Hope to see you there.

Dennis Gruending is an Ottawa-based writer and a former NDP MP. He has posted an article to his blog about the NDP's Faith and Social Justice Commission. The FSJC is our party's vehicle for reaching out to faith-based groups and religiously motivated individuals. FSJC's bylaws and its slate of officers will be voted on at our August 14-16 federal convention in Halifax.

The New Democratic MPs are calling on His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to reverse his decision to reinstate Bishop Richard Williamson.

Joe Comartin (Windsor—Tecumseh), Charlie Angus (Timmins—James Bay), and Tony Martin (Sault Ste. Marie) have sent a letter to the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops asking that Bishop Williamson not be permitted to perform any ministry in any Canadian diocese until this controversy is resolved. The MPs have also written a letter to the Vatican condemning the decision to reverse Williamson’s excommunication.

“Bishop Williamson’s continued denial of the full extent of the Holocaust and his refusal to apologize for his remarks are completely unacceptable,” said Angus. “Canada needs to speak loudly and clearly on this issue.”

Bishop Williamson has publicly stated that he does not believe that gas chambers were used to kill Jews during the Holocaust, and that no more than 300,000 were killed during that genocide.

New Democrats want Canadian Catholic leaders to join them in sending the message to the Vatican that this kind of thinking is outdated and intolerable.

Les députés du NPD demandent que Sa Sainteté le pape Benoît XVI revienne sur sa décision de réhabiliter l’évêque Richard Williamson.

Joe Comartin (Windsor—Tecumseh), Charlie Angus (Timmins—Baie James) et Tony Martin (Sault Ste. Marie) ont envoyé une lettre à la Conférence des évêques catholiques du Canada demandant que l’évêque Williamson n’ait pas le droit d’exercer un ministère dans un diocèse canadien jusqu’à ce que cette controverse soit réglée. Les trois députés ont aussi écrit une lettre au Vatican dénonçant la décision d’annuler l’excommunication de Williamson.

« L’évêque Williamson continue de nier l’ampleur de l’holocauste et refuse de s’excuser pour ses propos : c’est complètement inacceptable, a dit le député Angus. Le Canada doit s’exprimer clairement sur cette question. »

L’évêque Williamson a dit publiquement qu’il ne croit pas que des chambres à gaz aient été utilisées pour tuer des Juifs pendant la Shoah, et a soutenu que pas plus de 300 000 Juifs ont été tués lors de ce génocide.

Le NPD veut que les leaders catholiques canadiens se joignent à eux en disant au Vatican que ce genre d’affirmation est tout à fait démodée et intolérable.

Voir ce communiqué, concernant la nomination d'une personne, au sein de l'Église catholique, pour expressément faire la promotion de sa doctrine sociale. Peut-être un pas dans la bonne direction, mais le scepticisme serait quand même très compréhensible. On verra.

The Federal Council of the New Democratic Party, on the 3rd and 4th of November, officially recognized our group as a Commission of the NDP. While we have existed for more than a year, we had not yet been recognized as an official component of the party. Our efforts will now take a new momentum. It is important to note that there are many groups in Canada that make the linkage between faith and social justice. For instance, the following website, from the Ottawa-based national organization called Citizens for Public Justice. It is a good example of the possible connections between faith and public life.
